Power of the Tongue

Does it matter what I say?

On this subject we have to go back to the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, all of nature, and most importantly, life.  How did He do it? He spoke everything into existence; He demonstrated the amazing power of words.  Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

The same Spirit of God that hovered over the waters, (The Holy Spirit) is the Spirit that is within us today.  When we pray in tongues we create, and the creation is hovering.  Let’s see what happens next.  Genesis 1:3 Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.”

We can continue through Genesis 1:1-31 and God consistently created by saying let it be and it was.

And so God created by using words after the Spirit hovered.  In the scriptures of creation, God is already teaching us the importance of allowing the Holy Spirit to pray through us.  That is how God created then and this is how we create now, we are created in His image remember?

Whether we are born again or not our words have power.  Positive or negative they create our future.  That means that our words are certainly capable of causing trouble and destruction in our lives.

We are not the only ones causing destruction through our words; friends and family can also do that.  For example, Johnny and Suzy are getting married.  There will always be some people at the wedding saying “it will never last” and then they will mention all the reasons why they say so.  At this point the Devil is rubbing his hands together saying “yippee, I have just been given authority to destroy this marriage.” (James 3:2-11) If Johnny and Suzy have the knowledge of the power of words they will be able to come against the tongues that have risen up against them, and it will not prosper.  If not their future and marriage is in trouble.

Each of us is a creation of God, when we speak destruction into one of God’s creation we are empowering Satan.  The only power he has over us is the power that we give him through the words of our mouth.  Proverbs 18:20 Wise words satisfy like a good meal; the right words bring satisfaction. 21 The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.

Learn to see others through the eyes of Jesus.  How you ask? Well, start with seeing yourself the way God does.  How does he see you? He sees you righteous, justified, sanctified, holy, and cleansed. You are very precious to God.

How do I change my speech?

The best step toward change is to get some good gospel music. Listen and learn to sing songs of love to your Heavenly Father.  Learn to praise Him with all your heart.  Also learn to compose your own songs in tongues, you can’t sing wrong and you can even make up your own tune. (Colossians 3:15-16); (Hebrews 3:15)
